Diabetes Prevention - Life! Program

1. The diabetes prevention program is an initiative which aims to help people identify and minimise the lifestyle risk factors that are closely associated with the development of type 2 diabetes. Identification of risk factors for type 2 diabetes involves a simple check list.

People who answer yes to one or more of the following risk factors should consult their doctor and call WCHS about the program:

  • I am over 55 year of age
  • I am over 45 year of age and overweight
  • I am over 45 year and get little or no exercise during a usual day
  • I am over 45 year of age and an immediate family member has diabetes
  • I am over 45 year of age and have high blood pressure
  • I am over 35 year of age and from an Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, Pacific Islander, Indian sub continent or Chinese background
  • I have heart disease or have had a heart attack
  • I had diabetes when I was pregnant (gestational diabetes)
  • I am a female with polycystic ovarian syndrome

For people at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, help is available changes to weight, diet and physical activity levels have been shown to decrease likelihood of progressing to type 2 diabetes by 58% in at risk people. The diabetes prevention course Life! helps you achieve these changes.

The course consists of:

  • An individual assessment and goal setting session
  • 6 group sessions
  • Individual follow up as required
