Diabetes Support Group
The objective of the group is to provide people living with Type 2 diabetes a place to get together to share their self management, discuss problems, form friendship and learn from one another. This group also has the opportunity to update their diabetes knowledge through visiting speakers and enjoy social outings. Through our monthly meeting, meet people, learn and share in a relaxed and friendly setting.
Sessions are held every 4th Thursday of each month.
Afternoon tea is also provided.
Something from our group members.....
“The diabetes support group makes me feel less alone. I get much
support to keep me motivated. I also gained a lot of information about the management of diabetes”
“I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes about eighteen months ago.
When I got home I felt a bit lost. I Googled diabetic diets etc on my computer. There were so many different diets I became more confused than ever. I remembered a neighbour had done a course at the Whitehorse Community Health so I phoned the centre and left a message. Later that week a lovely person rang me and made an appointment for me to see her.
At this appointment I learned so much but she also thought I would benefit from doing a Diabetes Education course, which was three hours a week for three weeks.
Some of the topics covered in this course were healthy eating, glycaemic index, reading food labels, dining out, exercise, home blood glucose monitoring, foot care etc. I would recommend this course to any diabetics who haven’t previously done a course.
After the course you are not left to your own devices there are monthly support group meetings with guest speakers.”
What does it cost?
The only cost is a voluntary gold coin donation.
